September 19th 2010

Today was the tall cake class in greenwood. The instructor was really nice and we learned some cool things about how to keep you cake from squishing itself or falling apart. I made a fall stacked cake that I will be taking to work tomorrow. The class was out in the store at Joann fabrics where customers can walk by and see what we are doing and I guess these two ladies really liked my cake because they went back to the cake decorating section and were trying to find the tree on top of my cake. When one of the ladies came back asking about it i told her that I had actually made the tree, pumpkins, and leaves.

Cake icing -butter cream
leaves and grass -royal icing
tree and pumpkins -fondant

Today was more cake decorating. I made the leaves for my fall cake that I am going to make in class this weekend and my mom and I made my Little Sister's birthday cake. There were some problems but it just looks like the castle might be under attack, no big deal. I think the grass and flower pots out front really added a lot to the cake.

More cake decorating with my mom. What can I say, we signed up for a tiered cake class for next Sunday and we have to bring in two double layer cakes apiece. I decided to do a fall themed cake, complete with fallen leaves, scary looking trees, and pumpkins. I made the tree today out of dow rodes, black twist ties, and fondant, and the royal icing for the leaves.

Today my mom taught me some more cake decorating secrets and now I can make the ribbon rose out of butter cream icing

I also helped my mom decorate a cake that she wanted to make for work. Really she just wanted to practice doing the basket weave on a cake instead of just on paper and she had promised she would bring in a cake to work. My mom had already made the flowers while she was in the cake decorating class out of royal icing

Finally mom taught me how to make Wilton roses and rose buds out of royal icing. In November I am going to make a Rapunzal cake for the new Disney movie Tangled. The cake is going to be a tower with a fondant princess on top and roses going up the side. So I made small versions of the rose buds and full roses.

Today was busy but I still managed to fit in some creative time. Mom taught me how to do the basket weave and reverse shell boarder for cake decorating. Sadly I forgot to take pictures but the basket weave is actually really fun.

Today was the final project for out fondant and gum paste cake decorating class. When we got to class we didn't realize that the cake wasn't supposed to already be on the cake board so we had to pry it off then cover it with fondant and then put it back on. You can't really tell we messed up at all thanks to the grass boarder.

My mom got my Little Sister a doll for her birthday but all because I told the little munchkin that I would make her a dress for her birthday and now her doll needed a dress to match.

My mom also taught me how to do some of the things she learned in her cake decorating class today. Four hours with my hands cover in icing is insane.

August 28th 2010: Fun with fondant

Today's creative thing is brought to you by cake decorating!

My mom and I are in a fondant cake decorating class and our final project is monday so tonight we made the cake, the icing, and colored the fondant that is going to cover the cake. Mixing that much fondant is like a day at the gym. Good thing all of our flowers and leaves have already been colored and made.
